Protecting life within Findhorn Bay and its approaches

Boat and Engines

The Engines

The MIRO rescue craft is fitted with twin Mercury 60HP outboard engines. These were also specially made for MIRO with extra long shafts to allow for the extra high transom fitted to the boat.

The engines are also built to be post immersion restart able, by removing the cowls and draining the carburettors using the fitted taps, the engines can be restarted following a capsize

The Boat

MIRO operates a 5.8m Humber Destroyer which was officially launched in August 2006. The boat was custom built for the needs of MIRO and as such has an extra high transom in accordance with the MCA’s Rescue Boat code, this is to allow for operation in heavy seas and reduce the risk of becoming flooded.

This particular boat was chosen for its sea keeping allowing the crew to deal with challenging conditions on the “bar” at Findhorn. The boat also has a fairly shallow draft which eases operations in particular within Findhorn Bay.
